Trust Fund members report bench installations, memorial dedications and one bench shipping July 1

Members of the Needham Revitalization Trust Fund reported on May 28 that nearly all funded benches are on site and are already being used by residents, and that a series of memorial installations and improvements are complete or imminent.

The chair said all benches except one have arrived; volunteers including committee members built several benches and the town’s Department of Public Works prepared and poured pads where required. The group described a planned June 6 memorial event for the McQuey bench and said the Dan Warren bench at DeFazio is in place with the community pleased with its siting.

One bench, designated for bicyclists and associated with Fred Cresy, was expected to ship on July 1 and will be installed on the sidewalk in front of the Starbucks without a poured pad. Committee members said they will build that bench and relocate an existing bench further down the street to complete the installation.

Members also discussed using benches to encourage appropriate sidelines behavior (instead of sitting on the field) and noted Park & Forestry had said lack of seating prompted some unsafe seating on active fields. The DPW provided an unexpected extra pad after snowbank issues delayed earlier pad visibility, the chair said.

The meeting included brief praise for volunteers who built benches and for families and recipients organizing dedications. No formal votes were required for the bench updates; members agreed to continue outreach for additional donations to expand pad availability and additional benches.
