Seabrook Island council approves small sustainability and conservation grants

The Seabrook Island Town Council unanimously approved three community grant requests during its Aug. 26 meeting, funding small-scale sustainability and conservation programs for island residents.
Lauren, representing Camp St. Christopher, requested support for a sustainability workshop on Oct. 7 focusing on rain barrels. The original application sought funds for 10 barrels but the town’s remaining community-promotion balance was $230. Lauren said the $230 would cover a demonstration rain barrel that could be gifted to a resident and enable the workshop to proceed; council approved the $230 award by voice vote.
Council then considered a separate Camp St. Christopher request to develop beekeeping as an educational tool on the camp’s property. Laura described the $2,430 request as the first step toward establishing beehives and related pollinator gardens; council moved and approved the $2,430 grant.
Steve McFallen of the Greenspace Conservancy presented two related requests: sponsorship for a Lowcountry symposium on resilient landscapes (Oct. 15) and support for the conservancy’s 25th-anniversary celebration at Camp St. Christopher (Dec. 5). Council voted unanimously to approve the conservancy’s requests and to allow town representatives to attend the symposium.
All three approvals were voice votes recorded as "I." Council members emphasized the value of resident-facing sustainability programming and thanked the applicants for detailed narratives and clear project plans. The grants are subject to standard municipal documentation and reimbursement procedures.
