Union Township board directs $231,859 in extra state aid to special education and approves federal grants

The Union Township Board of Education voted Aug. 26 to appropriate $231,859 of 2023-24 Extraordinary Aid for the 2024-25 budget to cover unmet special-education needs and related costs.
Business Administrator Eva Preuett told the board the district had received $531,859 in Extraordinary Aid for the 2023-24 year, $231,859 more than the $300,000 originally budgeted. The board resolved to apply that additional $231,859 to the 2024-25 budget, allocating $50,000 to related services, $66,859 to extraordinary services, $50,000 to tuition to private schools, $30,000 to special-education autism services and $35,000 to employee benefits.
The resolution notes the Department of Education permits districts to appropriate such funds in the following fiscal year without Commissioner approval and directs district officers to process the change.
Separately, the board authorized submission and acceptance of federal grants for 2024-25: ESSA Title I ($11,445), Title II ($5,192), Title IV ($10,000), IDEA Basic ($115,561) and IDEA Preschool ($3,823). The board also certified the Board Secretary and Treasurer reports and approved June and July bills totaling $2,867,634.74 (June: $1,350,233.80; July: $1,517,400.94).
