Union Township superintendent says farewell; board appoints interim leader

Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Diaz addressed the Union Township Board of Education at its Sept. 23 meeting, thanked students, staff and families for his seven-plus years of service, and said he was leaving the district in capable hands. “As I step away from this role, I leave with confidence, knowing that the district is in excellent hands,” Diaz said.
The board voted to appoint Dr. Barbara Popp as Interim Superintendent effective Sept. 30, 2024 through June 30, 2025 at a daily rate of $700 not to exceed $79,800. The motion to approve the interim appointment (OB1) was moved by Lou Palma, Vice President, and seconded by Caitlin Piontek; the roll call recorded six votes in favor and three board members absent.
Members of the administration, staff and the Union Township Education Association offered brief remarks of congratulations. Kerry Foote spoke on behalf of the administrators, Laura LoPiccolo spoke on behalf of staff, and Tina Russoniello spoke on behalf of the UTEA.
The appointment follows several executive-session discussions on personnel reported during the meeting. The board said closed-session matters would be released when confidentiality no longer applied.
