Board approves transportation contracts, sets $35/hour for extracurricular drivers after coaches, students raise concerns

The Wallkill Valley Regional High School Board approved multiple joint-transportation contracts and set pay for extracurricular bus drivers at $35 per hour at its Dec. 17 meeting.
As part of the Finance Committee consent items, the Board approved joint transportation arrangements with High Point Regional High School and others to share buses for bowling and the cooperative swim team. Individual trip costs were listed in the contract language (for example, nine shared swim trips at $114.30 each and multiple bowling trips at $173.50 and $201.04). The Finance Committee motion approving Items 1–6 included these contracts and passed unanimously.
The Board also approved a $35/hour rate for Karl Klein and Ryan Kreher for transporting students to extracurricular activities in 2024–25, with a two-hour minimum per route. The change was presented in the negotiations committee and recorded as approved.
During public comment, Sergio Rivas, the swim coach, described how lack of bussing had affected the team, and student Noah Direnzo and others described long commutes to shared athletic sites such as Kittatinny Regional High School. Several public speakers later thanked the Board for approving drivers and transportation support.
