Township well‑testing shows mostly nondetectable or within‑limit results; one failure each across several tests

Constance Grill, working with the Environmental & Open Space Commission and Raritan Headwaters, presented the township’s May well‑testing summary at the July 17 meeting. She said 62 residents participated (down from 81 last year) and that testing covered bacteria (including E. coli), nitrates, lead, arsenic, radon and gross alpha, with a small subset tested for PFAS.
"Overall, I think the results are really good," Grill told the committee, adding that most wells were nondetectable or within the state's safety levels. She reported one failure each for bacteria, lead, radon and gross alpha; the PFAS samples (two wells) were negative.
Grill said residents who receive failing results are given specific recommendations by the testing service and that some contaminants (radon, gross alpha) do not have on‑well remediation options specified at the state level; lead and bacteria have remediation recommendations provided with test results. Committee members encouraged continued outreach and suggested mapping anonymized results to show geographic patterns if privacy protections permit.
Committee members praised the outreach effort and said residents value the free testing kits and drop‑in sampling; staff and volunteers will consider whether to add optional map‑based summaries with de‑identified data for future years.
The committee did not take action beyond accepting the report and asked staff to explore ways to increase turnout and consider targeted sampling if volunteers can be enlisted.
