The Waterford Township Board of Education on Aug. 21 approved the district's academic and operational plans for the 2024–25 school year, including new district goals and multiple handbooks and curricular guides.
Board members approved three district goals intended to guide instruction and student supports: implement the Into Reading curriculum with fidelity (Goal D1), evaluate and adjust the current response-to-intervention model to better support at-risk students (Goal D2), and implement school-wide positive behavior systems or trauma-informed and healing-centered practices (Goal D3). The approvals were part of the education slate moved by Barbara Libak Fanz and seconded by Benjamin De Vuyst and passed by roll call vote with one abstention on a related item (Thomas Leach on item 11).
The board also approved the Student Code of Conduct and the School Safety and Security Plan for 2024–25. The district approved a mentoring plan and a Professional Development Plan that the administration said would support teacher implementation of the new curriculum and evidence-based interventions. The board approved a set of evaluation instruments for the year, including the teacher rubric and related evaluation tools for school nurses, counselors, social workers, specialists and instructional coaches; those instruments are available upon request, the board noted in the motion.
Administrators presented and the board approved the Parent/Student Handbook and the Staff Handbook for 2024–25, plus curriculum guides covering English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, visual and performing arts, world language, health and physical education, technology/STEAM, counseling, and gifted and talented programs.
The motion package included ESEA/ESSA Title I budget allocations for Rtl paraprofessionals and the Title I coordinator. Two paraprofessionals (A. Wood and J. Swierczynski) are listed with total annual salaries of $20,258 each; the agenda shows $4,457 (22%) charged to local funds and $15,801 (78%) to Title IA funds for each paraprofessional. The district's Title I coordinator (L. DiRenzo) is listed with a salary of $62,189, with $48,507 (78%) charged to local funds and $13,682 (22%) to Title IA.
The board acknowledged Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) investigation receipts and affirmed one HIB investigation outcome related to a bus incident, which the report listed as not HIB and recorded "seat change/communication with driver" as the action taken.
Implementation: the approved plans and handbooks become the district's guiding documents for the 2024–25 school year; attachments and detailed instruments were noted as available upon request in the board packet.
