Reinbeck council sets first reading on water and garbage rate increases

The Reinbeck City Council on May 4 opened a public hearing and approved the first consideration of two ordinances that would raise utility rates for city customers.
Mayor Jamie Eiffler opened the hearing at 6:03 p.m. on Ordinance #2026-06OR (repealing current water service rates) and Ordinance #2026-07OR (repealing garbage and recycling service rates). The proposed changes would increase water rates by 2% and raise garbage and recycling charges by $0.50 each. The council heard no written or oral public comments and closed the hearing at 6:05 p.m.
Councilmember Johnson moved that the ordinances be given their first consideration; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Trepp. A roll-call vote followed: Wambold, Pease, Johnson, Trepp and Bueghly each voted "aye," and the motion carried unanimously. Council set the second reading of both ordinances for June 1, 2026.
The ordinances were introduced as part of routine utility and budget management. The council approved a number of other financial items during the meeting, including a Consent Agenda that listed bills to be paid totaling $46,376.97.
If adopted after the second reading, the changes would take effect according to the ordinance language and typical municipal adoption timelines. The council did not discuss alternative rate levels during the hearing; no amendments were offered at the May 4 meeting.
