City leaders told the Loris City Council on Jan. 5 that work to replace two major sewer lines and rehabilitate manholes is under way and that documentation is advancing closure of multiple FEMA Hurricane Florence projects.
Interim Administrator Angel R. Neighbours said four of eight FEMA projects discussed previously have been closed out, two are under review and two are still being worked toward closure and "documentation has been the key to getting the projects closed." He said the remaining project closures are likely to be completed by the end of February.
Mayor Michael E. Suggs and Administrator Neighbours also reported that the city's street sweeper is back in operation following major repairs and should be deployed downtown beginning this week. Public works has added staff: Shakima Grissett as water/sewer billing clerk, Thomas DiMaggio as a water technician and William Stavrakis as a meter reader. The city is continuing phase two of the Liberty Street sewer installation and rehabilitation, and SC Rural Water Association performed drone inspections of the three water tanks to meet Department of Environmental Services requirements. Hydrant flushing and valve maintenance are ongoing.
The updates were delivered as part of the council's regular communications and department head reports; no formal council action was taken on the items reported.
