Loris municipal court reports large drop in pending caseload; jury-trial requests remain

Judge William N. Hutson told the Loris City Council on Jan. 5 that the city’s municipal court has sharply reduced a backlog of cases since he took office on July 1, 2025.
Hutson said pending cases dropped from 1,301 as of June 30, 2025, to 400 as of Dec. 29, 2025, and that roughly 70% of the earlier backlog has been cleared. He said the court is working through “a little over 100 pending jury trial requests” to determine which require jury panels.
The judge said the court added an extra monthly court date and now holds municipal court on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He credited Aundrea Washington, clerk of court, and cooperation from the police department for helping clear cases and said the schedule change should reduce overtime payments for officers who previously attended hearings on nonwork days.
Hutson said he will return with another update in six months. The council did not take formal action on the court report.
