Weehawken board reviews Student Safety Data System, accepts September HIB report and discusses HIB in closed session

The Weehawken Board of Education reviewed student-safety reporting and harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) procedures at its Oct. 15 meeting.
During the regular session the board reviewed the Student Safety Data System for Jan. 1–June 30, 2024, noting incident counts by school: Weehawken High School (WHS) 36 incidents (investigators DeBari/Ferullo; outcomes recorded as remediation/conferences), DWS 1 incident (investigators Viera/Hassan), and TRS 3 incidents (investigators Ferrer/Mera). The board approved the review by unanimous roll call.
The board also accepted the superintendent's HIB determinations for September 2024, with minutes recording that no pending HIB items remained and that parents had been advised of their right to request a hearing (none requested). The board cited Policy 5512 and state processes governing investigation and notification.
Later in the evening the board moved into an executive caucus under the Sunshine Act to discuss personnel, collective bargaining and litigation; the minutes state that discussion took place regarding HIB during the closed session. The board returned to public session at 9:03 p.m. and the meeting adjourned at 9:04 p.m.
Why it matters: The Student Safety Data System review and the HIB determinations are part of the board's oversight of school climate, student discipline and mandated reporting. The use of a closed session for HIB-related discussion is consistent with confidentiality rules that can limit public disclosure.
The review and the HIB acceptance were recorded as unanimous votes among members present.
