Canton council approves event closures, facility use and routine motions

The Canton City Council approved several routine motions at its June 8 meeting. The agenda was approved on a motion by Carl Ernst with a second from Josh Nordsving. The consent agenda was approved on a motion by Cindy Shanks with a second from Josh Nordsving; consent items included May minutes, June disbursements, and Resolution 2022-08 regarding distribution of a surety bond payment for Lolly Melander, and a waiver of the town hall rental fee for an American Red Cross blood drive planned for June 14.
On a motion by Mayor Nick Prestby, seconded by Carl Ernst, the council approved a temporary closure of North Main Street from Prairie Avenue to the bank drive-up entrance on Aug. 20 for a Canton Day Off event; because that stretch of Main Street is a county road, Clerk Brock Bergey will forward the council’s recommendation to the Fillmore County Board for consideration. The council also approved free use of the town hall on Oct. 29 for a Canton Community Association-sponsored dance (motion by Josh Nordsving, second by Carl Ernst).
The council received a price quote from Torgerson-Ostby Floor Coverings to replace carpet in the town hall entrance and coat room ($1,042) and the front of the stage ($1,609). Council members discussed alternatives and postponed any decision until the July meeting. The council adjourned at 7:10 p.m. on a motion by Carl Ernst, seconded by Josh Nordsving.
