Canton clerk: USDA application submitted for water project; SMIF grant sought for town branding

Brock Bergey, Canton’s city clerk, told the council on June 8 that the city submitted a funding application to USDA Rural Development for a proposed water and wastewater replacement project and is awaiting a response with no definitive timeline.
Bergey also said he is applying for up to $10,000 through the Southeastern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) Small Town Grant Program to assist in expanding Canton’s brand identity; awards are scheduled to be announced in August. The clerk said SMIF funds would support marketing tied to the city’s identity as “Southern Minnesota’s first stop.”
On a separate matter, Bergey reported that the Fillmore County Attorney’s Office dismissed the legal case involving Evan Richardson; council members discussed concerns related to an abandoned vehicle that led to the earlier citation but no further action was recorded.
Next steps: the city will await the USDA's response on the water/wastewater application and will report SMIF grant results in August if awarded.
