Policy committee recommends one-year board officer terms with a three-year consecutive limit

The Williamsburg County School District policy committee on Monday reviewed proposed edits to policies BD and BE that govern how the board organizes and elects its officers, and recommended limiting how long any officer may serve consecutively.

The committee’s draft change keeps the officer posts as chair, vice chair, secretary and parliamentarian and maintains annual election at the board’s organizational meeting on the fourth Monday in January. “What the policy committee is recommending is that each officer will serve for a one-year term not to exceed three consecutive years,” the chair said while presenting the changes. The draft also clarifies the presiding officer for the election process: the superintendent or the district attorney will conduct officer elections.

Committee members said the edits are primarily to align BD and BE language and remove redundant text. The committee noted meeting location details — the Public Service Administration Building, County Council Chambers at 2011 West Main Street — will be included in the BE policy text for clarity.

The committee does not finalize board policy in the standing committee; the recommended language will be forwarded to the full board for consideration at a future organizational meeting. Mr. McKenzie, who participated in the discussion, was asked to verify the precise wording before the item is presented to the full board.

If approved by the board, the changes would formalize annual elections, the presiding-officer role during elections and the proposed consecutive-term cap. The committee requested that the board’s organizational meeting notice reflect the clarified language when the item is scheduled.
