DHR director asks city for emergency funds to restock food closet serving thousands

Sabrina Brasher, who identified herself as director of the Department of Human Resources, asked the council to provide $500 to replenish a newly established food closet at DHR and to consider $1,000 for the next fiscal year to keep the program running.
"We have recently started a food closet at our office to help assist any members that come in needing food," Brasher said. She told the council the pantry currently receives some donations from employees and supplements supplies by referring clients to the West Island Food Bank, but staff have had to turn people away when donations run out. "We serve at least, I would say, 3 to 4,000 at least," Brasher said when the council asked for an estimate of clients served.
Council members pressed for details on how the pantry is stocked, confirmation of partnerships with local churches and the food bank, and clarification about ongoing funding sources. The council did not take an immediate funding vote; members said they would discuss the request and follow up in future budget discussions.
The request will be considered alongside other budget priorities during a scheduled budget work session in late June; no direct appropriation was approved at this meeting.
