Fayette council authorizes soliciting bids for roughly $500,000 in paving work

The Fayette City Council voted to authorize staff to solicit bids for a set of paving projects estimated at roughly $500,000 so the city can budget and pursue work in the next fiscal year.
Luke Porter presented the 2026 paving plan and told the council that grant funding applications had been submitted but that awards were still uncertain. "What I would need tonight is just permission to go ahead and let the project," Porter said, listing the targeted streets: "23rd Street Northwest, 2nd Avenue Northwest, 19th Street Northwest, and 3rd Street Southeast." He said the city would use bid results to determine exact costs for the next fiscal-year budget.
Councilman Herring made the motion to proceed with letting bids; Councilman Morgan seconded. The council voted in favor with aye votes recorded and no opposition.
Council members discussed related issues: the potential need for sewer work to accompany one of the streets (6th Street Southwest) to strengthen future grant applications, the use of a fuel index as a bid contingency, and the timeline that would push construction into the next fiscal year. Staff said the TAP project is nearly complete and that sewer-plant work is largely finished.
Council directed staff to bring estimated bid numbers back to the July work sessions and to continue pursuing grant opportunities to supplement local funding.
Because the city will not begin physical work until bids, approvals and budget allocation are complete, no construction contract was awarded at the meeting.
