Contractor: Media center, HVAC and roof work are progressing; media center turnover expected by Sept. 30

Conor O'Brien of Legacy Construction Management told the Watchung Borough Board of Education on Thursday that work on referendum-funded projects is progressing, with several major pieces of the scope moving toward completion.
"The existing HVAC continues to be operational," O'Brien said, and added that the media center's above-ceiling and electrical inspections have passed. He said flooring and casework are in place and that the district expects to turn the media center over to the librarian "at the end of the day September 30th." O'Brien said work on toilet-room upgrades, front-office renovations, gym ductwork and painting remain underway.
O'Brien said unit ventilators for the HVAC project will begin installation the coming Monday. "We will start at a slow pace just to make sure that everything goes well," he said, describing a plan to install one unit initially and then "ramp up" to multiple units during second shifts and weekends so classrooms have heat and fresh air during the school day.
Superintendent Dr. Julie Glazer confirmed most equipment has arrived and that the district and contractor will coordinate installation to avoid disrupting classrooms. She noted Valley View students would not have access to the media center for back-to-school night because work remains in that space.
Contract staff and district facilities personnel said they have contingency plans to isolate single units during replacement so heating remains available for occupied rooms and that crane work to replace rooftop units is being scheduled on days when buildings are closed.
The board heard additional updates on roofing curbs and exhaust fans, and was shown progress photos from Bayberry and Valley View. Administration said it is coordinating with building principals to give at least 48 hours' notice before second-shift work in classrooms.
The board meeting record shows continued oversight of the referendum projects and routine coordination among contractor, architect and district facilities staff as installation phases move forward.
