Ingham County commissioners reorganize leadership, approve consent agenda and read resolution honoring late chief public defender

The Ingham County Board of Commissioners held an organizational meeting where the board elected its leadership for 2026, approved a consent agenda with one item held out for separate consideration, read an honorary resolution for the late county chief public defender Keith Watson and announced committee assignments and retirements.

"I am deeply touched by the way you've honored Keith," Pettibone said, thanking staff for their support and expressing gratitude for the "outpouring of love" shown to her family.

The chair announced committee and board appointments for the year, naming commissioners to common services, finance, human services, animal advisory and shelter board, board of health, the Capital Regional Airport Authority liaison post, McLaren board of directors, the Land Bank and the local emergency planning committee, among others.

Two commissioners used the announcements portion of the meeting to describe upcoming employment changes: one said tomorrow would be their final day at an outside 8-to-5 job after a long career, and another said they had retired from their prior career as of Dec. 31 and spoke about continuing advocacy work. Colleagues offered congratulations.

The meeting closed after a brief period for county services to follow, with the presiding officer noting there was no further business on the agenda.
