Commissioners honor late Ingham County chief public defender Keith Watson with memorial resolution

The Ingham County Board of Commissioners introduced and read a memorial resolution honoring the life and public service of Keith Watson, who served as the county’s chief public defender. A presenter read the resolution aloud, detailing Watson’s biography and career accomplishments, and a family member addressed the board to thank commissioners and staff.

The presenter read the resolution: "A resolution honoring Keith Watson and county chief public defender," which described Watson as born in Detroit, later relocating to Lansing, and noted his educational background and legal career: a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University, a master’s degree from Central Michigan University and a Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. The resolution recounts that Watson served as chief public defender for Ingham County, taught trial advocacy (including at Thomas M. Cooley Law School and Widener University Law School), and participated in criminal defense professional organizations.

Cara Pettibone, who identified herself in the meeting as Keith Watson’s stepdaughter, addressed the board and family members. Pettibone thanked commissioners and staff "for the outpouring of love you have shown for Keith and the compassion and support you have extended to me," and said, "You will always be in my heart, and please remember, always fight joyfully." The presenter and commissioners offered condolences and recognized Watson’s service.

The resolution was introduced on the agenda for the board to honor Watson’s life and service. The board discussed and read the resolution during the special orders portion of the meeting; family remarks and condolences were recorded as part of the item. No legislative or budgetary action resulted from the resolution beyond the formal recognition.
