Denton trustees approve 2024–25 budget, set $101,727.20 property tax request

The Village of Denton Board of Trustees unanimously approved the 2024–25 fiscal-year budget and set a property tax request of $101,727.20 with a levy of 0.482685 at a Sept. 19 meeting at the Denton Community Center.

The action followed a series of public hearings. Trustee John Juricek moved to open the initial budget hearing at 6:55 p.m.; the motion was seconded by Trustee Trent Wheatley and carried. Carmen Stanely of HBE presented the village’s financial overview and told the board that tax funds cannot be used to pay for utility funds; the presentation noted that transfers from keno funds into water and sewer have helped those utility funds operate. No members of the public offered comment during the hearings.

After discussion and procedural motions, the board voted unanimously on a set of linked steps: to exceed the budget limit by an additional 1% of restricted funds for 2024–25; to increase the 2024–25 tax request by 2.5%; and to adopt Resolution 24-9-1 (Levy Authority). Trustee Juricek moved to approve the budget for the 2024–25 fiscal year; Trustee Doug Rosekrans seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Trustee Amanda Fangmeier moved to approve the property tax request of $101,727.20 and a levy of 0.482685; the motion carried unanimously.

The clerk reported a tax-request breakdown earlier in the meeting of $68,727.20 for non-bond purposes and $33,000 required for a water bond. The board’s actions formalize the village’s levy and allow the administration to proceed under the adopted budget.

In other business, the clerk gave a brief report on a Senator Fischer grant fund (details not specified in the minutes). Trustees agreed to move the October regular meeting to Oct. 3, 2024; discussion of employee compensation was tabled until that meeting. Clerk-Treasurer Charlotte Te Brink certified the minutes as a true and correct copy of the proceedings.
