District outlines school-based mental health supports and Move This World SEL rollout

Hazel Ellison, executive director of student services for the Marlboro County School District, presented the district’s social-emotional learning (SEL) strategy and school-based mental-health partnerships.
Ellison described the Move This World curriculum as the district’s trauma-informed SEL program, explaining that it provides daily videos, classroom lessons, mindfulness exercises and bullying-prevention modules. She said Move This World is being used across grade levels and that the district will track usage data to measure whether the curriculum reduces incident reports and chronic absenteeism.
Ellison outlined current partnerships: Care South provides licensed counselors in district schools (with caseloads described for several campuses), and the district is exploring reestablishing a partnership with Tri-County Mental Health Center for additional staffing in 2025–26. She explained that school-based mental-health services are referral-based (teachers, staff or parents can refer) and that Care South bills families directly when applicable; the district’s social workers are paid with federal Title I funds but that funding was described as a shifting source in coming years.
Ellison also described tools and crisis resources: the Stop It anonymous reporting app used on student Chromebooks and the 988 Lifeline for after-hours crisis support. Board members thanked staff for the initiative and posed implementation questions about scheduling, selection of students for services, and funding. Ellison said providers visit schools on scheduled days and that parent approval is required when a teacher initiates an external counseling referral.
