Iron Mountain Public Schools finance committee reviews HVAC, track renovation plans and fund transfers

The Iron Mountain Public Schools Finance Committee met Feb. 9, 2026, at the district Media Center to review facilities projects, short-term cash management and planning for a track renovation. Chair Jennifer Solka called the meeting to order at 4:47 p.m.
The committee approved the agenda (moved by Shari Picucci-White; seconded by Lisa Carollo) and moved to approve the minutes from Jan. 12, 2026 (moved by Lisa Carollo; seconded by Shari Picucci-White). The minutes do not record vote tallies or an explicit roll-call result for those motions.
Superintendent Jerry Sardina gave a brief overview, saying this month was "business as usual" and that more financial details will arrive next month as bills are processed. The committee was told that HVAC contractors remain on schedule to begin work in April or May; the district received its first large invoice for that project, which will be paid this week, and staff noted the possibility of transferring money from the Zanardi fund to cover additional upcoming costs as bills arrive.
Staff reported that the Central building fire-alarm installation is about 99% complete. The minutes state the Children's Museum plans to be out of the space on March 1; district staff will tour the layout to identify work needed so the space can be ready for Fall 2026 use.
The minutes also note a planned General Fund transfer into a Cedar fund before the March meeting so the district can begin accruing interest on that balance; the document does not identify which staff member announced that transfer. On facilities planning, Superintendent Sardina said IMKCS will contribute toward a renovation of the track at the IA building and that Coleman Engineering will perform site sampling in spring once snow melts to assess whether full-depth replacement is required or if only the top layers must be removed. He said he has been in contact with Representative Preston of Menominee County, who previously assisted with a track grant in Stephenson, and that Representative Markkanen may be involved in discussions; Sardina estimated it could take about a year to complete planning and secure resources, with construction most likely beginning in Spring 2027.
No formal recommendations were forwarded to the full board at this meeting, and the minutes record that the meeting was adjourned at 5:01 p.m. (motion by Shari Picucci-White; seconded by Lisa Carollo).
