Public Works highlights dashboard, cost savings and airport terminal completion

Beaufort County’s Public Works director updated the Public Facilities Committee on April 20 on staffing, service changes and new public tools, and staff also briefed the committee on the recently completed Hilton Head Island Airport terminal project.
Public Works Director Bradley Harriot said the department has reorganized several functions, added mid‑level managers and moved some services back to the general fund (solid waste and recycling). He described contract reductions and in‑house work that have lowered recurring costs, notably replacing an annual contracted e‑waste event (about $120,000/year) with ongoing county‑run drop‑off collection that staff estimated will cost about $500/year. "We're doing that in house now... and now it's gonna cost us about $500 a year to recycle e waste," Harriot said.
Harriot previewed a public‑facing stormwater manager dashboard that will publish capital and maintenance projects, schedule notices for neighborhood maintenance and show project status; staff aim to make the dashboard live within 30–45 days and said they will notify council when it goes live.
Assistant County Administrator Jared reported the Hilton Head Island Airport Terminal Phase 1 is complete. "Completed, $40,000,000 project... completed without any incurring debt," Jared said, noting funding came from airport, FAA and state sources. He said a small, invite‑only grand opening for the new concourse is scheduled for April 30 and described Phase 2 scope and funding as pending; staff also noted a separate $1,000,000 state aeronautics grant for terminal Phase 2 that the committee endorsed contingent on final grant acceptance.
Committee members asked staff to publicize the stormwater dashboard and to continue outreach on convenience center improvements and litter enforcement. The committee approved a resolution commissioning an additional litter‑control officer and welcomed Kelly, the newly promoted supervisor for litter control.
What’s next: Public Works will publish the dashboard when ready, continue internal promotions and project delivery, and coordinate with county communications to notify the public about service and project schedules.
