Finance committee recommends E‑Rate tech purchases and summer communications intern to full board

The Iron Mountain Public Schools Finance Committee on March 9 recommended that the full school board authorize technology purchases through the FCC E‑Rate program and approve a temporary communications intern for summer 2026.
Superintendent Jerry Sardina reviewed the district's February "broad base" financial report and said revenue adjustments have been made and are reflected in the document. He also told the committee that insurance rates have risen slightly; because several capital projects are starting the district added builders-risk insurance, and the district has added an additional school vehicle this year.
Sardina told the committee that E‑Rate approval is an annual action the full board must take to receive federal funding for technology projects. The committee recommended that Director of Non-Instructional Services Ben Reath be authorized to enter into agreements with awarded E‑Rate vendors to purchase wireless access points, fiber cabling, uninterruptible power supplies and network switches, with a district cost not to exceed $20,000 to be incurred in the 2026–2027 fiscal year.
The committee also recommended hiring a temporary communications intern from NMU for the 2026 summer months to support the Communications Coordinator while that staff member is off. Sardina framed the hire as both an experiential opportunity for the student and an operational aid for the district during the summer.
The committee recorded routine motions to approve the agenda and minutes (mover Mrs. Lisa Carollo; second Mrs. Shari Picucci-White). There were no community comments. The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
The committee's recommendations will be brought to the full Iron Mountain Public Schools Board for final approval at a subsequent meeting.
