Iron Mountain administration outlines museum, HVAC and track timelines

Administration updated the Iron Mountain Board of Education on three facilities items during the Dec. 8 meeting: the Children's Museum relocation and planned renovations, the district HVAC project schedule, and the early steps for a track reconstruction.

Superintendent Jerry Sardina said the Children's Museum expects to close Jan. 10 and be fully out of its current space by Feb. 15; once vacated, the district intends to begin renovation work to ready the facility for the 2026–27 school year. Sardina did not provide cost figures or a contractor for the renovation during the meeting.

On HVAC, administration reported that all contractors convened and the proposed calendar indicates work should begin the first week in May. Officials said it is too early to determine whether the gym will be available for fall sports and that timing decisions will be made later.

Regarding the track, Sardina said the district needs a vendor to take core samples to determine how many layers must be removed for a proper reconstruction; the number of layers and the sampling results will determine the project's scope and next steps.

Why it matters: these projects affect facilities availability, athletic scheduling and future district capital planning. No budget or contractor awards were presented at the meeting; the board received informational updates and no formal project approvals occurred.
