The Iron Mountain Board of Education on Dec. 8 approved a new educational assistant (EA) posting, accepted two staff resignations and approved the hire of two classroom teachers contingent on background checks.
The posting — approved by a 6–0 vote after a motion from Darren Petschar and support from Jennifer Solka — designates the EA's primary duty as monitoring the in-school suspension room at the district's 512 building.
The board accepted with regret the resignation of Karen Ellis as the Iron Mountain High School varsity track coach, effective immediately, and accepted the resignation of Michelle Mayfield, lunchroom prep/server, effective Nov. 26, 2025. Both motions passed unanimously.
On hires, the board voted 6–0 to accept administration's recommendation to hire Julia Brown as a 4th-grade classroom teacher and Andrea Weaver as a 6–12 choir/5th-grade music teacher. The hires are contingent on clear state and FBI criminal record checks in accordance with Public Act 189 and are scheduled to begin Jan. 5, 2026 if checks clear.
Why it matters: the EA posting addresses an operational supervision need for in-school suspension; the approved hires and accepted resignations affect classroom and extracurricular staffing going into the second semester.
Next steps: Human Resources will post the EA vacancy and complete the background checks for approved hires; administration will report hire outcomes to the board.
