Teaneck board adopts equity policies and designates Nov. 14 as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

The Teaneck Board of Education on Nov. 13 approved second readings of key equity-related policies and amended a resolution to designate Nov. 14 of each year as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.
Board President Clara Williams presided as the board placed Policy 1140 (Educational Equity Policies/Affirmative Action), Policy 1523 (Comprehensive Equity Plan), Policy 1530 (Equal Employment Opportunities) and related regulations on second reading and approved them as recommended by the superintendent. The agenda materials included the district’s Policy Guide language and references to N.J.A.C. 6A:7 provisions guiding equity planning and affirmative action procedures.
During Board Operations the board considered and adopted a resolution recognizing Ruby Bridges’ historic role in school desegregation and directing the district to mark Nov. 14 annually as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, with appropriate programs and activities across all Teaneck schools. Dr. Dennis Klein moved to amend the resolution to add a statement (read into the record) and the amended package was approved.
Separately, the board placed Policy 5520 (Demonstrations) on first reading but later moved to table that item; the motion to table Policy 5520 was recorded and Policy 5520 did not pass at that time. The minutes list the votes on the policy items and note which policies advanced.
The board’s action also reaffirmed required processes for Harassment/Intimidation/Bullying (HIB) investigations under N.J.S.A. 18A:37-15(d), directing the superintendent to notify parents/guardians of findings and actions within five school days when required.
The board’s packet and the district policy guide cited in the meeting include the specific regulatory citations and procedural language for implementing the approved policies. The district said the policies take effect immediately as prescribed in the agenda materials.
