The Teaneck Board of Education on Oct. 15 approved the first reading of a set of equity‑related policies, including Policy 1140 (Educational Equity/Affirmative Action), Policy 1523 (Comprehensive Equity Plan) and Policy 1530 (Equal Employment Opportunities).
Board President Clara Williams opened the item and the motion to approve first readings was made by Board Member Victoria Fisher and seconded by Jonathan Rodriguez; the vote was unanimous. The packet materials include full policy language and associated regulations from the Strauss Esmay policy guide that the board will consider at a later meeting for final adoption.
The policies require the district to adopt a Comprehensive Equity Plan every three years, designate an Affirmative Action Officer, conduct professional development on equity issues and use data disaggregation to identify disproportionate outcomes. The resolution also references state regulations and outlines procedural steps the district must follow, including submission of the CEP to the Executive County Superintendent for confirmation.
The board’s action was procedural—approving the first reading to allow time for review and public comment before a subsequent vote. A motion adopting the first reading was recorded as Motion: V. Fisher; Second: J. Rodriguez and carried unanimously.
