Teaneck board advances equity policies; tables demonstration policy for later review

The Teaneck Board of Education on Oct. 9 advanced a set of policies aimed at educational equity and equal employment while tabling a separate policy on demonstrations.
Board President Clara Williams presided as members approved first readings of Policy 1140 (Educational Equity Policies), Policy 1523 (Comprehensive Equity Plan), Policy 1530 (Equal Employment Opportunities) and related regulations and procedures. The board recorded a formal motion to table Policy 5520 (Demonstrations); Vice President Kassandra Reyes made the motion and Jonathan Rodriguez seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The equity-related policies direct the district to develop a Comprehensive Equity Plan every three years, designate and publicize an Affirmative Action Officer, provide ongoing professional development on equity issues, and ensure hiring and assignment practices avoid discrimination, in language drawn from N.J.A.C. 6A:7 and related guidance. The policies and regulations also describe complaint procedures for employees and students alleging discrimination.
The board did not take a final vote on the demonstration policy at the meeting; tabling preserves it for additional review and future action. The minutes record the action as a formal board motion carried by a unanimous vote.
