Council Bill 260175, which restores the council’s ability to change only a street’s suffix (for example, Street to Place) without renaming the entire thoroughfare, received a favorable committee recommendation on July 2.
Sponsor Councilman Zack Blanchard said the change is targeted and infrequent, giving the council flexibility in special cases—such as short blocks near parks or monuments where a suffix would better reflect character. He cited examples where matching suffix to a block’s built environment or traffic expectations could reduce confusion and better reflect local context.
DOT and Planning discussed coordination for street-name changes, and the Law Department approved the bill as to form and legal sufficiency. The committee moved the bill favorable and recommended it to the full council.
