Union board approves tutoring vendor and cooperative gymnastics; affirms HIB determinations

The Township of Union Board of Education on Dec. 10 approved several Education/Student Discipline Committee items, including a tutoring vendor for the district’s High Impact Tutoring Grant and a cooperative athletics agreement.
The board voted to approve GoGuardian Tutor Me/Pear Deck, described in the agenda as an NJDOE-approved vendor, to provide virtual on-demand tutoring for students in grades 3–12 for the 2024–25 school year at a cost not to exceed $119,405.65 from fund #20489. The tutoring approval extends services into the current school year under the grant.
The board also approved a cooperative sports program to combine Union High School’s gymnastics team with Dayton High School (Springfield Public Schools) for the 2024–25 season to allow district students to participate when Union does not field enough athletes.
Superintendent Dr. Gerald Benaquista explained the cooperative approach: "When we don’t have enough athletes for a team, district students can join Springfield’s team." The board carried the education motions unanimously.
The meeting also included the Superintendent’s report of Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying for Nov. 20–Dec. 10 and an affirmation of the superintendent’s HIB determinations for Nov. 12–19 for reporting purposes. The agenda noted that Kean Scholar Academy programming will be funded with Title IV monies; the administration said it will reduce college costs for participating students.
