Board accepts resignations and approves multiple FMLA leaves and substitute hires

The Township of Union Board of Education accepted multiple letters of resignation and approved a slate of leaves and substitute hires at its Aug. 27, 2024 meeting.
Resignations accepted included Juscelina Brito (bus aide, Transportation Department, effective Aug. 2, 2024), Karin Cigol (paraprofessional, Hannah Caldwell Elementary, effective Sept. 1, 2024), Nicole Filippone (preschool special education teacher, Hannah Caldwell Elementary, effective Oct. 5, 2024), Sandra Marques‑Albano (paraprofessional, Hannah Caldwell Elementary, effective Aug. 2, 2024) and Gary Vulturo (second‑shift custodian, Battle Hill Elementary, effective Sept. 9, 2024). The board accepted these resignations with regret as part of the personnel roll call.
The board approved numerous leave requests for the 2024–25 school year, including multiple paid FMLA intermittent leaves (examples: Kathleen Bruns Meyers, PreK teacher, Sept. 1, 2024–June 20, 2025; Jaclyn Vincent, kindergarten teacher, Sept. 2, 2024–June 20, 2025) and a paid medical leave for Union High School principal Althea Bossard (July 29–Aug. 31, 2024). Some unpaid FMLA requests for shorter periods were also approved (for example, Christopher Scarpati, math teacher at Burnet Middle School, Sept. 9–Nov. 29, 2024).
The board also approved updated substitute lists for the 2024–25 school year (rates listed in the minutes, e.g., substitute custodian $16.00/hr; substitute teacher $140.00/day) and other personnel actions including transfers, extra-pay assignments and job-description approvals for roles such as Instructional Coach.
Public commenter Sol Antencio urged that when special-education teachers take long-term leave, substitutes should be able to cover classes and follow students’ IEPs; Dr. Benaquista responded that long-term substitutes who are certified will cover classes.
All personnel motions listed in the personnel section were approved by recorded vote as recorded in the minutes.
