Stockton asks NJDOT to lower speed limits on Route NJ‑29, including reduced school zone limit

Stockton Borough Council on Dec. 15 approved Resolution 2025-90 asking the New Jersey Department of Transportation to modify speed limits along Route NJ‑29 (South Main Street).
The resolution cites a December 11, 2025 letter from NJDOT’s Division of Traffic Engineering supporting the borough’s requested changes. For both traffic directions the borough requested a 25 mph zone between the southernmost and northernmost Stockton corporate lines (approximate mileposts MP 21.72 to MP 23.03) and a 15 mph speed limit when flashing through the Stockton Elementary School zone (approx. MP 22.07 to MP 22.48).
Motion to approve the resolution was made by Councilperson Hunt and seconded by Councilperson Brown; the roll call showed all recorded members voting in favor. Councilmember Christine Slack, speaking during public comment, thanked the council for advancing the traffic‑safety measure. Council members said the request follows an NJDOT investigation that recommended the modification.
The resolution directs the borough clerk to submit a certified copy of the resolution to Jaimie M. Oplinger, Director of Traffic Engineering at NJDOT, for issuance of a Traffic Regulation Order under N.J.S.A. 39:4-8.3.
