Council adopts 20 mph school-zone limit on West Avenue

The Saratoga Springs City Council voted unanimously to amend city code and set a 20-mph speed limit on the West Avenue school zone in front of the high school during school days, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The proposed zone spans approximately from Congress Avenue to West Circular Street.
Council members opened a public hearing and heard residents express both support for traffic-safety measures and concern about enforcement approach. Sam Brewer noted particular hazards on one-way streets and intersections, while Mary Beth Delorme urged stronger enforcement and suggested camera enforcement rather than incremental speed reductions. Administration explained that the reduction corrects an earlier citywide reset from a 30-mph default to 25 mph that had missed this school zone.
After discussion, the council closed the hearing and took a roll-call vote. The motion to amend chapter 225, section 225-70 (Schedule 5: school speed limits inside the tax district) carried 5-0. City staff said the change will be enforceable during school days from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and signs and enforcement details will follow through the city's traffic unit.
