Stone Harbor updates: playgrounds, summer events, Shiver Polar Plunge, blood drive and gas-main work

Councilmembers shared community news: two summer events (Wetlands Summer Celebration July 26; Surfside Sevens July 18–19), playground work and grant submissions, the March 15 Polar Plunge, a Feb. 24 Red Cross blood drive, and a gas-main replacement affecting 83rd–93rd Streets with detours expected.
Councilmembers used the Feb. 18 work session to brief the public on upcoming events, capital improvements and short-term infrastructure impacts.
Victor Foschini, councilmember and liaison for Recreation and Tourism, said two special-event applications will be before council: the Wetlands Summer Celebration on July 26, 2025, and the Surfside Sevens rugby tournament on July 18–19, 2025. Foschini reported that work on the 96th Street playground is progressing and is expected to be finished for the summer season. He also said the borough submitted a Jake's Place grant for the 82nd Street playground and is awaiting state feedback. He relayed a citizen inquiry about whether the bocce courts will be updated.
Robin Casper, councilmember on the Natural Resources Committee, reported that extreme weather caused erosion to the access road to Stone Harbor Point Beach. Casper said the borough has requested permission from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to allow department of public works crews to repair the access road and that, if approved, repairs will begin in the coming weeks. Casper also announced the Stone Harbor Shiver Polar Plunge on March 15, 2025, invited volunteers to assist the Stone Harbor Museum with grant writing, and promoted the museum's Reeds Gala on Aug. 20, 2025.
Jennifer Gensemer, councilmember, urged residents to consider donating blood; she said the Red Cross will host a blood drive at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Stone Harbor on Feb. 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and provided 1-800-REDCROSS for appointments.
Mayor Timothy J. Carney thanked residents for patience with local roadwork, said Cape May County indicates the work should be complete by summer, and warned that a gas-main replacement for 83rd–93rd Streets will require detours.
