City officials briefed residents on public-safety and public-works preparations for the July 4 weekend, including parking restrictions on San Antonio, added enforcement staff and shoreline work to prepare for storm season.
The chair invited the police chief to summarize holiday plans. The chief said there will be no parking on the east side of San Antonio and at a few other familiar locations; the city will post no-parking signs and enforce restrictions with two new parking-enforcement officers, known as community service officers (CSOs), who will work over the holiday weekend.
The chief and the chair said public works will place additional no-fireworks signs and increase janitorial services — including trash pickup and portable restrooms — to manage the expected influx of visitors. The chief recounted recent reports of young people testing fireworks on the beach and said officers addressed the calls; officials reiterated that fireworks are not permitted due to fire risk.
Officials also discussed visible bulldozer activity on the beach, describing the work as sand redistribution under the shoreline management plan intended to reinforce the coastline ahead of storm season linked to El Niño; no completion date was provided. Separately, the chair said Carmel Area Wastewater District crews will perform micro surfacing on July 10 and July 16 to repave streets after recent pipeline work, and that conglomerate paving crews will return Monday and Tuesday to finish punch-list work on side streets (Ocean Avenue noted as potentially noticeable to residents).
City offices will be closed on July 4 in observance of the holiday; public-safety staffing will continue and the city asked residents to report any fireworks or safety concerns during the weekend.
