Jenison board approves agenda and amended minutes; discusses gate access and new tennis courts

The Jenison Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously at its Sept. 29 workshop to approve the meeting agenda and to accept amended minutes from the Sept. 8 SEAB Hearing and regular meeting.
Dr. Chris Reed moved to approve the agenda and Dr. Jennifer Griffin seconded; the motion passed 7-0. Mrs. Jen Postema moved to approve the Sept. 8 minutes, with an amendment clarifying language in the SEAB Hearing minutes; Mr. William Waalkes seconded that motion, which also passed 7-0.
On facilities, district staff reported that the gate behind the Kids First campus is currently locked during the school day, evenings and weekends and that locking the gate has corresponded with a noticeable decrease in vandalism. The district is working on a plan that would allow the gate to be unlocked at specific times (for example, arrival and dismissal) while maintaining campus security; morning coverage has been harder to staff than afternoon coverage, staff said.
Officials also noted the district’s new tennis courts are open for student use and are equipped with security cameras and lights that will be programmed to remain on for a set period in the evenings; portable nets will be monitored to ensure proper use and maintenance.
The board adjourned at 8:18 p.m.
