After public comment, Jenison staff say AI guidance is in place and will be refined

A parent’s public comment about artificial intelligence prompted the Jenison Public Schools board on Sept. 29 to hear how the district is approaching AI in classrooms.
Jason Lerg told the board he was proud of the marching band but concerned about student use of AI following his daughter’s experience. “He asked whether the district has a policy or guidelines in place regarding the use of AI in the classroom and for educational purposes,” the minutes state, noting his concern that AI tools can provide inaccurate information and raise ethical questions.
District staff told the board they have established standards for staff use of AI and posted informational materials outlining acceptable use. An AI Professional Learning Community has been working on practical classroom applications. The administration emphasized the need to be proactive as AI tools evolve and said it will return to the board with clearer guidelines on boundaries and acceptable classroom applications.
No district-wide prohibition or specific student-discipline protocols for AI were proposed at the workshop; staff described ongoing development of guidance and training for teachers.
