South Plainfield council advances pay and code ordinances, approves bills and schedules Dec. 22 hearings
Summary
On Dec. 8 the Borough of South Plainfield held second reading on an employee-compensation ordinance and introduced four other ordinances for first reading (public hearings set for Dec. 22); the council also approved payment of bills reported at $1,161,878.01 and moved several resolutions and an executive-session authorization.
Council President White opened routine business and the council approved minutes and executive minutes from Nov. 10, 2025.
At the meeting the council held a second reading of Ordinance 2376, described as "amending ordinance 2363 that provides for the compensation of employees of the borough," which the clerk presented and the council recorded a unanimous roll-call in favor as read at the meeting. The council also introduced four ordinances for first reading by title: Ordinance 2377 (sewer chapter amendments), Ordinance 2378 (code improvements), Ordinance 2379 (compensation for non-union professionals 2025'1028), and Ordinance 2380 (replacing ordinance 2326 on summer and part-time employment pay). The public hearing for those first-reading ordinances was set for Dec. 22 in council chambers at 7 p.m.
The clerk read several resolutions (including items listed as 25-364 and related numbers) and two items of correspondence were placed on the record: the Health Advisory Board monthly report for Nov. 2025 and Cultural Arts Committee minutes for Oct. 2025. The council also approved payment of bills; the clerk read the sum at the meeting as $1,161,878.01 and the roll call approved payment.
Council then moved four contractual matters into executive session by resolution (25-383) for further discussion behind closed doors. No final action on those contractual matters was taken in public.
What this means: the ordinances introduced for first reading will return for public hearing on Dec. 22; the second-reading ordinance recorded at this meeting was presented and recorded in roll call as passed in the public session. Staff will provide the ordinances' full text and the resolutions as required by statute prior to the next hearing.
The meeting then recessed to executive session for the listed contractual matters.
