GSSM foundation reports $1.5M raised but flags $481,000 in in‑kind gifts; trustees approve consent agenda

The Governor's School for Science and Mathematics' foundation reported it has raised $1.5 million this fiscal year but clarified that $481,000 of that total is an in‑kind contribution and not available as cash for operations, trustees heard at the board meeting.

Beth, who presented the foundation report, said the foundation's cash position is roughly 66% of its $1.2 million goal after removing the in‑kind gift. "That was an in‑kind gift. If you adjusted for that, we are at 66% of our goal right now," Beth said, referring to funds from SC Quantum.

Beth also said $200,000 of the amount raised this year represents the first installment of a three‑year contribution tied to the Google teacher education program. She described alumni fundraising that supports student meal fees (about $3,600 this year) and said an initiative called 'reunion zero' prompted 92% of the class of 2025 to make an initial gift.

The foundation noted sponsorship progress for the organization's annual award event (the Towns award) and reported four new foundation board representatives from SHL Medical, GFream, Zeus and Scout Motors.

During general business, trustees discussed the consent agenda and a faculty item on spring seminars. Trustee Dennis Gutter asked whether public speaking seminars were new; staff clarified that spring seminars are multi‑week sessions juniors attend and that public speaking has been offered for a handful of years. The board then moved and approved the consent agenda: Hayward moved to approve; Dennis Gutter seconded; trustees present voted in favor with no opposition.

Next steps: foundation staff said they will continue fundraising outreach and will share event and sponsorship details with trustees; the board recessed to enter executive session for gift acceptance and legal matters.
