Matt Afflerbach, chairperson of the Elk Township Combined Planning & Zoning Board, was elected chair at the board's reorganization meeting on Jan. 15, 2025. Jay Hughes was elected vice chair. The meeting was held at the Elk Township Municipal Court Room in Monroeville and began at 7 p.m.
The board adopted its 2025 schedule — regular meetings at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, except November which will meet on the first Wednesday — and designated "The Sentinel" and "South Jersey Times" as official newspapers for notices. Ann Marie Weitzel was appointed board secretary; the law firm Dasti & Staiger was appointed board solicitor; and Bach and Associates was chosen as both board planner and board engineer (the engineer appointment passed on an 8-1 roll-call vote). Mayor Carolyn Sammons administered oaths to reappointed members and board professionals.
The board also memorialized two prior resolutions: Resolution 2024-16, granting a bulk variance to Harry and Serena Holmes for property at 930 Aura Road (Application ZB-24-03), and Resolution 2024-17, a preliminary and major subdivision/site plan for D.R. Horton (Application SD-24-03). In the Holmes memorialization, the board adjusted Mr. Smith's prior vote to an abstention because he had not been present at the original hearing; the final tally recorded 8 yeas, 0 nays, 1 abstention. The D.R. Horton memorialization passed with a recorded tally of 8 yeas, 0 nays, 1 abstention after an administrative correction to road names was noted.
Chair Afflerbach and Vice Chair Hughes thanked board members and said they look forward to working together for the township's residents. The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
