Jonesville council approves charitable-gaming resolution, street project payments and routine business

At its Oct. 16 meeting the Jonesville City Council approved Resolution 2024-15 enabling a local nonprofit to apply for a charitable-gaming license, authorized pay requests and a change order for the West and Adrian Street project, appointed an LDFA member and approved other routine items.
The Jonesville City Council on Oct. 16 approved a package of routine actions that advance local infrastructure work and clear the way for a nonprofit’s planned raffle. Council voted unanimously to approve Resolution 2024-15, attesting that Keagan Gimenez’s nonprofit, Keagan Kares, is a local nonprofit organization so that the group may apply to the Michigan Gaming Control Board for a raffle permit scheduled to begin in February 2025. The motion to adopt Resolution 2024-15 was made by Council member George Humphries Jr. and supported by Brenda Guyse; the roll-call vote recorded seven ayes and no nays.
Council also appointed Victor Face to the Local Development Finance Authority board. Face, identified in council discussion as the president of D.H. Roberts Construction and the purchaser of NEFCO in the LDFA district, was appointed after a motion by Andy Penrose. The council approved Traffic Control Order #2024-02 to allow the Jonesville Lions Club to close Park Street and the block of Wright Street between Park and Chicago for the annual trunk-or-treat on Oct. 31, from 4:30–9:00 p.m.
On infrastructure business, council approved Pay Request No. 2 for $252,349.41, primarily covering underground utilities on West and Liberty Streets, and Pay Request No. 3 for $118,800.01 covering new copper water services and plumbing connections for 22 residences in the West and Adrian Street Improvement Project. Chris Grider made the motion to approve the pay requests, supported by George Humphries Jr. The council also approved Change Order No. 3 for the project to add a short extension of 8‑inch water main near Fayette Street and to install a gate valve on the 12‑inch main; council discussed that much of the change order cost will be offset by reduced main costs elsewhere in the project.
Other routine approvals included the 2025 Region 2 Planning Commission membership renewal for $587.52 and placement of the October accounts payable in the amount of $136,364.25 on the consent agenda; both measures passed unanimously. The council received the FY 2023–24 year-end budget comparison for review and heard a quarterly statement on the Jonesville Freedom Memorial Fund, which was established with donations from the Jonesville American Legion and is held at the Hillsdale County Community Foundation.
Mayor Gerry Arno adjourned the meeting at 7:23 p.m.
