After a presentation on the state’s revised math sequencing by Mr. Darren Rice, the board voted to approve the recommended textbooks for K–12. Rice said vendors met 95–98% of the South Carolina standards after a teacher-review “caravan” and recommended McGraw Hill for K–5, Voss Learning Company for grades 6–8 and SAS Learning Company for 9–12. A board member moved to approve the textbooks as presented; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
The board also approved three board‑approved courses for 2025–26 presented by Janine Webb: a yearlong journalism/yearbook class for grades 7–8, a robotics course for grades 5–6 (instructor to be determined) and a STEAM (science/technology/engineering/arts/math) course for grades 5–8 targeted to gifted-and-talented students. Board members noted the robotics class lacked a confirmed instructor but said interviews are underway; the motion to approve the grouped courses passed by voice vote.
On personnel, Superintendent Dr. Daniel Crockett brought certified teacher contract recommendations — 55 continuing contracts plus a small set of annual-1 and annual-2 contracts — explaining that annual-2 contracts may convert to continuing status once state certification is finalized. The board approved the recommendation by voice vote.
In a finance motion, the board approved a request from Dr. Crockett to transfer funds from the general fund balance to eliminate a negative athletics carryover of $9,587 so the program begins the new fiscal year with a positive balance. "We carried over a negative ... $9,587," Dr. Crockett said; the board voted to absorb the past debt from the fund balance and the motion carried.
The board authorized several field trips: a Junior Beta Club trip, a one‑day FFA Wildlife team trip to Coastal Carolina for four students (moved and seconded by board members and approved), and a June 12–14 trip by Coach Dodson to Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., including campus visits and competitive practice sessions in nearby towns; each motion passed by voice vote.
The meeting record shows routine procedural votes approving the agenda amendment to add the two field trips and approving minutes from the prior meeting. The session ended after a review of the general fund where board members were told federal funds arrived later than usual but are now in hand.
