Councilman Caldwell asked the council to consider naming the outdoor basketball courts at TB Thomas Park after Macio, a longtime youth leader who helped register children for recreation programs and who, council members said, had a decades-long impact on local youth.
Council members described broad community support for honoring Macio — several of his teammates and family remain in the area — and the manager said staff could prepare signage and lettering in time for Butler Heritage Week if the council votes in favor at next week’s meeting. The manager said signage fabrication takes one to two weeks and that staff have a sign design and a plan to order replacements and improvements in other city locations, including cemetery and park signage.
Councilman Caldwell said he will present a resolution next week and invited comments before the resolution is filed. No vote was taken during the work session; staff said formal action would occur at the next regular council meeting if members choose to proceed.
