Police chief reports difficulty contacting approved hire; borough manager announces hearings and community events

Police Chief David Pernice told the council Aug. 27 that a new hire previously approved by the borough has not responded to contact attempts and that he will reach out to the regional consortium of candidates and the Civil Service Commission to schedule oral exams.
"I have tried to make contact but have had no luck," Police Chief David Pernice said. "I am assuming he is no longer interested." Pernice told the council there are 32 candidates on the consortium list; he said his long-term goal is to hire two part-time officers but that only one part-time position had been approved by council. The council agreed to proceed with a search for one part-time officer and directed the chief to move forward with Civil Service steps and candidate outreach.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells provided a set of community and administrative updates: an Erie County Planning EMS meeting at Fort LeBoeuf on Aug. 28; the Devereaux Day kickoff and Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail Head promotion on Sept. 13; a Sept. 25 health insurance presentation for council members; free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training Sept. 27–29; and the UPMC Hamot Erie County Firefighters Association safety awards dinner on Sept. 27. Wells also said the council will hold a public hearing on a zoning ordinance amendment and will vote on an amendment to the parking ordinance at the next council meeting scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m.; both hearings will be advertised as required.
Wells noted the council opted not to advertise for towing bids and that the borough is preparing a letter of support for a PennDOT Charging & Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program application along the U.S. Route 6 corridor. No public commenters spoke during the meeting.
The updates provide near-term administrative steps for staffing, public engagement and grant support. Council asked staff to proceed with candidate outreach and to follow required advertising and notice procedures for the Sept. 16 hearing.
