Eunice board approves street abandonment, equipment surpluses, contract renewals and abolishes district fire chief

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen and Alderwomen of the City of Eunice on Dec. 10 approved a package of routine and administrative actions: they adopted Ordinance 1224(B) abandoning the Fannie Street extension and Paula Street, supported an LGAP grant application for improvements to the Eunice Dog Pound, renewed the contract with St. Landry Fire District #6, accepted completion of the 2023 LCDBG Street Improvement project, declared multiple pieces of equipment surplus and abolished the District Fire Chief position.
Ordinance 1224(B) to abandon the Fannie Street extension was adopted; the minutes record YEAS from Marion “Nootsie” Sattler, Chad Andrepont, Germaine Simpson and Randall Reed and an ABSTAIN from Connie Thibodeaux. Alderman Randall Reed moved Resolution 1224(A) supporting the city’s LGAP application for the dog pound; the motion carried. The board also authorized the mayor to renew the city’s contract with St. Landry Fire District #6.
Police Chief Kyle LeBouef requested that a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe (K-9 unit, ID #7254) be declared surplus and sold to the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department; the board declared the vehicle surplus and authorized its sale under LA R.S. 38:2212.1(A)(2)(a) for $12,000. The board also declared multiple Fire Department hose sections and miscellaneous parts surplus at the request of Fire Chief Chaise Brown. Chief LeBouef reported he had received a resignation letter from Police Communications Officer Alexis Boulet and the board accepted the resignation.
The Mayor introduced, and the board concurred with, new subject matter to abolish the District Fire Chief position. Mayor Scott A. Fontenot said he had met with Fire Chief Chaise Brown and, citing financial obligations and that there would be no harm to the department, advised the board that “it would be best to abolish the position of District Fire Chief.” The board voted to abolish the position (motion moved by Chad Andrepont, seconded by Randall Reed).
The board approved payment of the city’s bills for November and acknowledged receipt of financial reports; departmental reports were given by Police Chief Kyle LeBouef, Fire Chief Chaise Brown and Jenna Donaldson of the Eunice Public Library. The meeting adjourned.
