Deephaven Park Committee reviews 2026 preliminary levy and CIP, maintenance needs and board vacancy

The Deephaven Park Committee reviewed the 2026 preliminary levy process and the draft city and capital improvement budgets during its Sept. 4 meeting, with members and staff discussing potential shifts and additions to the CIP.
Committee members raised multiple park maintenance items: picnic tables at Deephaven Beach and the possibility of allowing fire pits there; ongoing repair needs for the Northhome Trail steps; rust stains on the Children’s Park gazebo (Public Works will attempt a cleaning and, if unsuccessful, the committee said it may consider repainting or replacing materials); a broken bituminous curb along Children’s Park that requires repair; and converting the Children’s Park fountain from water supplied by a nearby store to the newly installed well.
Members also questioned the name "Rocky Beach" because it may not be a true beach, and noted an unnamed city-owned parcel across from the platform courts and Harralson Park. The committee discussed developing a tree-planting plan at Nocomo Beach to replace trees removed for Emerald Ash Borer and other projects.
Madsen presented a PowerPoint from the Cottagewood Garden Club showing the final plantings installed at Children’s Park; the board expressed gratitude for the Garden Club's volunteer work. Madsen also said the City Council is pursuing a fireworks show for the U.S. Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) and that moving forward will depend on available funding or grants and donations; Park Committee members expressed support for pursuing the fireworks.
On board membership, the committee discussed applicant Gabrielle Turner for the seat vacated by Tom Erdmann after his election to the City Council. Chair Cory Lepper and Board Members Ryan Macgregor and Amy Frye volunteered to form a subcommittee to interview Turner and report back to the board.
After additional discussion and updates, a motion to adjourn was made by Andy Fazendin and seconded by Joe Haugsland. The motion carried, with votes in favor from Cory Lepper, Andy Fazendin, Amy Frye, Ryan Macgregor and Joe Haugsland, and the meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:30 p.m.
