Council liaison says city aims to keep property tax increase under 10%; retaining-wall variance continued

City Council Liaison Tom Erdmann briefed the Planning Commission on the City Council’s work on the 2026 budget and a pending retaining-wall variance.
Erdmann said the council’s goal is to keep next year’s property tax increase below 10 percent. He said the initial budget had indicated a 15 percent tax increase and that the council worked to bring that figure down; the current proposed increase is 9 percent. He compared Deephaven’s proposed increase with surrounding communities, explaining some neighboring cities show lower increases because they do not operate a city hall or their own police department.
Planning Director Pat Smith added that the council continued action on a retaining-wall variance at 19725 Lakeview Avenue to the Oct. 2 council meeting to give the applicant time to move the proposed retaining wall closer to the existing wall. No commission action was required on those items.
