Akeley council adopts travel policy, approves contracts and several maintenance projects

The Akeley City Council on May 13 adopted an out-of-state travel policy (Resolution 13-2026), approved the Hubbard County Attorney contract, accepted a Minnesota Department of Transportation change-order estimate, and approved several small capital and maintenance projects as part of routine business.
Clerical and finance items began the meeting. On a motion by Bobbie Wosika, seconded by Dan Riggs, the council approved the consent agenda, which included April minutes, the treasurer’s report and receipts and disbursements. Kristi Kath, reporting under City Hall business, presented an auditor recommendation to approve claim numbers 11074-11112; the council approved those claims on a motion by Bobbie Wosika and a second from Dale Nelson.
On infrastructure matters, Kristi Kath reported a MnDOT change order showing an initial city share of $10,368.00; Kristi said unused product will be credited back to the city. Dan Riggs moved to approve Minnesota Department of Transportation order number 0016 in the amount of $10,368.00; the motion was seconded by Dale Nelson and passed unanimously.
The council adopted Resolution 13-2026 (an out-of-state travel policy) on a motion by Dan Riggs and a second by Dale Nelson. The council also approved the Hubbard County Attorney contract, which expires June 30, 2026, on a motion from Bobbie Wosika and a second from Dan Riggs.
The council reviewed quotes for City Hall entrance concrete (All Around Stone Solutions at $2,080; KL Concrete at $10,110) and accepted the lower All Around Stone Solutions estimate. For the public restrooms at Paul’s Patio, the council approved Rock Solid’s $8,290 estimate for concrete and authorized up to $4,503 for landscaping from Minnesota Diversified Services, with the council to select the second contractor only if their estimate proves higher. Council members discussed hours for the new bathrooms and decided to keep them open 24 hours initially and reassess whether vandalism becomes an issue. The council also directed staff to investigate posts around the propane tank and to proceed with one camera to monitor the museum/restroom area.
Mayor Brian Hitchcock moved to table further discussion on the Akeley Depot building — which has roof and door damage and might require demolition — until the next meeting; Dan Riggs seconded and the motion passed unanimously. During the public forum Randy Vredenburg suggested the city consider purchasing the North Country Repair property for the museum when it comes on the market.
