Lookout Mountain board approves minutes and financial report; hears updates on new fire engine, school recognition and public works

At its Feb. 14 meeting, the Mayor and Board of Commissioners approved the Jan. 10 minutes and the December financial report, received an update on a new fire engine and training site, heard that the local school will hold a Blue Ribbon celebration, and reviewed public-works and recreation plans.
The Mayor and Board of Commissioners of the Town of Lookout Mountain met at Town Hall on Feb. 14, 2023. Mayor Jones called the meeting to order and “recognized a quorum for the conduct of business,” and the board approved the minutes of the Jan. 10 meeting after a motion by Commissioner Bentley and a second from Commissioner Leavengood.
Jenifer Waycaster presented the town’s financial report through December 2022; after discussion Commissioner Bentley moved to approve the report and Commissioner Hailey seconded. The board voted to approve the Financial Report.
Commissioner Bentley updated the board on public-safety items, reporting the expected delivery timeline for a new fire engine. He also thanked Town Judge Persinger and family for allowing the Fire and Police Department to use a house for training purposes. Bentley noted a scheduled meeting with CARTA representatives at Town Hall.
Commissioner Leavengood reported that the local school had returned to session and that the town planned a celebration recognizing its national Blue Ribbon School designation, presently scheduled for Feb. 24.
Mayor Jones, reporting for the absent Commissioner Valadez, thanked the City of Lookout Mountain, Georgia for lending its garbage truck while the town’s was out of service and said the walkway at Natural Bridge Park had been repaired. The Public Works Department is reviewing options to update and replace employee uniforms.
Commissioner Hailey said signage at the Town Common was revised to address dog control and waste clean-up. He added that, with help from the Joint Recreation Board, plans for new batting cages have been developed; the cages are intended to be permanent once a suitable location is determined.
Under new business the board recognized Derrick Young for 23 years of service to the town and 36 years in law enforcement; Chief Schermerhorn presented a plaque and a retirement check. Mayor Jones also brought commissioners up to date on WWTA work at Fleetwood Drive and Ochs Highway and said Tennessee Department of Transportation planning for Scenic Highway would begin soon. He said budget planning meetings will start in advance of the upcoming budget season.
The meeting adjourned and the board set its next regular meeting for March 14, 2023.
